California the golden state with its beaches, movie stars, Disneyland and extensive agricultural areas throughout the state and especially in the San Joaquin Valley also has over 100 apple orchards and numbers of other fruit and nut orchards and growing areas. Though it has been called "The food basket of the World", the San Joaquin Valley has not been nationally recognized for the diversity of its produce. Oranges, peaches, garlic, tangerines, tomatoes, kiwis, hay, alfalfa and numerous other crops have been harvested with great success. With this agricultural abundance available, California also now has 28 large and small cider producers that create quality ciders from apples, pears and a number of other delicious fruits grown in the state.

AppleGarden Farm - Tomales, CA
Applegarden Farm, We grow organic apples for our own brand of hard cider. Our apples are the heritage varieties such as Kingston Black, Kerrys Irish Pippen, Nehou, Stayman Winesap, Roxbury Russet and several other russet-type apples, as well as various crab apples which add tannins and body to the lighter apple juice. We have a few sweet apples for early picking, but the majority of the apples are too bitter and sharp to enjoy as dessert fruit. Our orchard is certified by Marin Organic and our cider is made using all natural yeast. We harvest the apples over a long period of time in the fall,  picking each variety as it becomes ripe and storing for a few weeks so that the natural sugars increase.

THE CIDER: Applegarden Farm Hard Cider- Our “style” of artisan cider is a still, dry, farmhouse variety with apple “notes” which is very different from the commercial brands which tend to be sweet and “fizzy.” This cider pairs well with many of the sharp cheeses as well as spicy foods. It is especially nice with the local oysters!

Bonny Doon Vineyards- Founded in 1983 by Randall Grahm, Bonny Doon Vineyard made its mark on the vinous world with its pioneering efforts with Rhône varieties. Grahm was one of California's original Rhône Rangers. Since adopting Biodynamic® farming practices in 2004, Bonny Doon Vineyard wines evince a deeper sense of place, complexity, and varietal expression and a noticeable sense of organization. We aim to make the most soulful wines we can possibly muster—wines of vibrant vitality.

THE CIDER: Query Sparkling Hard Cider- What might a blend of apple, pear, and quince taste like naturally fermented (with indigenous yeast)? Result (not surprisingly): The ethereal suggestion of pineapple quince; the pungent, heady, dusky perfume of pear; and the earthy succulence of apple. I never thought I'd see... a pome as lovely as Querry. Crisp in acidity and bone dry, Querry is the perfect accompaniment to, well, essentially everything. It is composed of virtually everything, but most significantly: 58% pear, 33% apple, and 9% quince.

Boonville Cider House - Boonville, California
Booneville Cider House-  With an orchard first mentality, Boonville Cider House uses its favorite varieties of apples to put the finest cider into every can, bottle, and keg. Made with gumption, and drank with gusto, the Boonville Cider House is less a place and more a state of mind. Right now the radical folks at N2 Wines in Yountville are sharing their facility with us, until we break ground in Boonville on our dream facility. So crack a can and taste Autumn in Boonville, taste us wassailing beneath the stars, and taste the hard work and great times that go into every gallon.

California Cider Company and Ace Cider- Our Award-Winning Ace Hard Ciders are very pure, clean and refreshing because we use ONLY the best eating apples for our juice and the best ingredients we can buy, There is a big difference between Ace Hard Ciders and other brands. We realized that the cider industry in the United States had been weakened in the past by some poor quality ciders on the market and some consumers have been turned off. Now is the time to try something new and exciting to drink. ACE hard ciders are great refreshment, chilled on their own and elegant enough to bring to the dinner table, pour in your favorite glass and have with a variety of meals.

Ace Apple- has an apple nose and a clean dry finish. It tastes like a Sauvignon Blanc. It is made out of 100 per cent apple juice and is all natural, gluten-free and low-calorie like the rest of our cider range. Ace Joker- is our driest cider, made from 100% apple juice; it has champagne characteristics, yeasty with an alcohol of 6.9%. It won the 2013, San Diego Cider and Beer Festival and took a Gold Ribbon as the Best Cider in the competition.
Ace Perry- First released in 1996, this is the first Perry cider made in California. It became very popular very quickly, as it is so refreshing. It is made from apple and pear juices. We use champagne yeast in all our ciders and ferment for 10-14 days.
Ace Berry- This cider is a sweeter cider at 5% alcohol by volume. We ferment the apple juices for 14 days to dryness and then add back fresh blackberry and raspberry juices to produce a light purple cider.. Ace Apple Honey-  With a dry fermented apple base we add Gipson’s Sonoma Wildflower Honey, which is getting more and more expensive. We finish up with a golden colored cider at 5% alcohol by volume with a slight spritz because of the density of the honey. The cider starts the palate with sweetness and then finishes dry. Ace Pumpkin- We add cinnamon, cloves and allspice to fermented apple juice to produce a 5 per cent cider which tastes like pumpkin pie. It is orange in color with a full rich taste that makes you want more….we carbonate the cider, cold- filter it four times before we bottle and keg it. This cider is released after Labor Day and is ideal for Halloween through Thanksgiving; although some customers think we should make it year round.

Devoto Orchards
Devoto Orchards Cider- We are a small family farm and cidery, but the largest cidery in California that uses exclusively CA-grown certified organic apples. Since 1976, we’ve grown nearly 100 varieties of heirloom and cider apples that we use in our farmstead cider blends. Our commitment to integrity and stewardship of the land holds true in every bottle of Devoto Orchards Cider. Our ciders are an expression of the terroir, microclimate, and intensive farming techniques that we employ. Made from our estate-grown apples, we approach cidermaking from a winemaking prospective and only ferment ciders when apples are at the peak of their ripeness and fresh off the tree from the months of August-November. Our small-batch, artisanal ciders are meant to be enjoyed with friends and family because they’re extremely versatile, refreshing, and food-friendly.

100% Gravenstein, Single Varietal Cider. Made from 100% Gravenstein apples, an heirloom apple variety that our county was once famous for but is now disappearing as the orchards are being pulled out and replaced with wine grapes. So we are calling it "SAVE THE GRAVENSTEIN" as part of our mission is to increase awareness for the variety. Backyard - is a blend of local residents’ rescued backyard apples. Every year in west Sonoma County, thousands of pounds of backyard apples are wasted because the average person cannot use all the fruit from their trees, so we were inspired to put these historic apples to use.
1976 - is a hommage to the year Stan & Susan Devoto left Berkeley to move ‘back to the land’ and planted our family’s first orchard in west Sonoma County. Visionaries of their time, they valued biodiversity and cultivated vegetables, flowers, and 55 heirloom apple varieties that we still grow today.
Cidre Noir- In November, as winter draws near, we bundle up and harvest the last and most charismatic of our apples.  These hearty varieties hang on the tree for nearly 7 months, slowly developing deep and concentrated flavors.  The Arkansas Black, Black Twig, and Black Jonathan apples make up the backbone of the Noir.  Thirteen more heirloom varieties balance body with refreshing crispness.

Domaine Le Mieux
Domaine Le Mieux After purchasing the small See Canyon farm in 2006, Karen and Wayne Le Mieux were unexpectedly gifted with a bountiful apple crop. They gathered the Le Mieux family, young and old, to pick, press and produce both sweet and hard cider. Their “Apple Champagne" – Vin De Pomme – was born. Determined to make an apple wine that is as interesting as a grape wine, we set on an adventure to learn about wine making and traditional Champagne techniques. Vin De Pomme is crafted from select apple varieties picked at the peak of ripeness. The unique See Canyon climate produces apples with exceptional balance and clarity.

Drew Winery,  Our connection to the land does not end with wine. We are also apple farmers. Our 15 acre orchard was planted in the early 1960's. Named after the original Blossom School that was first located adjacent to this orchard where the children of the orginal homesteader families on this ridge attended kindergarten thru third grade. There are 6 varieties of apples planted here that include Gravensteins, Golden Delicious, Rhode Island Greenings, Jonathans, Rome Beauties and Red Delicious.  So what does the next chapter hold for this beautiful heritage orchard? We love our orchard and want to do right by it; we feel we have become orchard preservationists by default. Apples are not a really a viable business unless you make something with them. With that experimental vision,we are currently conjuring up a vintage sparkling cider.  Check back for updates!

Julian Hard Cider- Since the first American settlers arrived to our country over 300 years ago until prohibition in the 1920′s, hard cider was the original drinking man’s beverage on the farm, in the factories and through our coastal shipyards. Located in the frontier gold mining town of Julian, California, our growing company continues the American tradition of handcrafted, quality hard cider production using the finest ingredients, painstaking attention to detail and good old fashioned hard work. The recipe originates from 1670 colonial America and is comparable to the finest British ciders. Unlike many “impostor” hard ciders on the market, it is easy to have more than one pint of Julian Hard Cider as we do not use concentrated apple Juice or additives which leave the drinker with a lingering sugary film and after-taste. One taste of our premium hard cider and you will experience why Julian Hard Cider is “American to the Core”.

Lone Madrone Winery and Bristols cider is a part of the Lone Madrone winery, owned and operated by brother and sister Neil and Jackie and Neil's wife Marci. Jackie and Neil grew up in the West Country of England which is very much cider country. We are not talking murky apple juice here but the fermented version. When Neil moved to California he was disappointed to find none of the traditional beverage of his home, of which he had been known to partake on occasion. So in 1994 Neil began making small batches of cider from local apples under the Bristols name. Since that time it has evolved into a small line up of ciders. These ciders are all from select varieties of local apples, primarily from See Canyon and Paso Robles, although we have played with fruit from Oregon. All ciders are 100% apple juice and fermented on the native yeasts of the fruit. We ferment different ciders in different casks, some in retired Bourbon casks some in retired white wine barrels but most in stainless steel.

Santa Cruz Cider Company-  Our family has a great passion for using the local harvest, hand made products and anything with alcohol in it. So, hard apple cider seemed to be a perfect fit. We got our start with a pick up truck full of “found” apples and a borrowed press. We have now moved on to our own equipment and an unlimited supply of apples, thanks to Dave and Gretta for the apples and all of the 2013 harvest crew. We couldn't have done it without you!

THE CIDER: lot 13- The start is quite sophisticated without the intense sharpness often associated with a dry style cider. Moving quickly from a tart apple flavor to almost wine-like fruitiness then relaxing into a pleasantly crisp, dry finish. This cider uses 100% Santa Cruz apples. Each apple was hand picked, lovingly washed, crushed and pressed in small batches. We hope you enjoy this truly hand made, local product.  Available Fall 2014!

See Canyon Hard Cider - San Luis Obispo, California
See Canyon Hard Cider-  Apples were the last thing on our mind. That is, until we found ourselves nurturing an abandoned apple orchard back to health on our new family farm, nestled just three miles from Avila bay.  Our relationship blossomed and so did the trees.  One taste of the fruit set us in a new direction - California Hard Cider.  We hope you enjoy!

THE CIDER: See Canyon Hard Cider- Very nice dry cider with a champagne tingle and yeast in the body. Clean & a little tart.

Sonoma Cider - Healdsburg, California
Sonoma Cider-  All Sonoma Ciders are 100% intense, free of gluten and fully organic, from select fruit though reclaimed ciderworks equipment. It’s not an easy trick but, for us, an easy choice. Both product and planet emerge better. All are personal, an idea nursed, through trial and error, to fruition. Each, though, is surprisingly distinct. They’re our children, Sonoma’s children, intense labors of love. We, naturally, can’t pick a favorite. That’s your job.

The Hatchet Apple- Ah, a paradoxical case of small = large. Through patient, and occasionally wobbly tasting sessions, an epiphany emerged to David, Robert and our unfailingly curious crew – smaller apples. With more concentrated flavors, compact apples seem to yield more intense, distinctive flavors. And so, all obvious efficiencies and economics aside, The Hatchet was born. Using a unique blend of native organic apples, we handcraft each batch to bring out fresh, ripe apple aromas, carefully pairing sweet and tart varietals to ideal effect. The result is a clean, refreshing hard cider with noticeable complexity and a lively finish. All hail the little things. To our tastes, there’s simply more going on in here. Cheers.  The Pitchfork Pear- Cheers. Welcome to the put-up-or-shut-up show. Ever the purist, David was a little reluctant to include pear in the Sonoma canon. So they drew up a deal. If Robert could coax a pear proto-type close enough to give David a glimpse of something genuine, with real cider integrity, David would join the fray. The Pitchfork is our happy ending. It’s an apple connoisseur’s pear cider, hand-crafted with organic apples and a measured infusion of pear essence. It’s both intense and balanced, greeting you with the distinct aromas of both fruits. We’re convinced its fresh play of flavors, crisp start and creamy pear finish will inspire a fan club all its own. With David, the skeptic, presiding. Bottom’s up.  The Anvil Bourbon- To someone steeped in the art of barrel aging, The Anvil’s journey surprised no one more than the cider master himself. While the grape lends itself to wood aging, and gradual infusion, not so the apple. To get the intensity we wanted, only a healthy dose straight from the bourbon vat did the trick. Alas, we’d love to spin a romantic tale of vintage bourbon barrels in cloistered caves but, well, sorry. In compensation, we offer a bourbon cider with a real bourbon presence. It offers a clean, lively, aromatic profile with a layered smoky finish. It’s truly integrated and rounded, yet vitally distinct. Enjoy.

Lost Orchard Dry Cider- Not your mama’s cider. Roxbury Russet, Nehou, Muscat de Bernay, and other traditional “bittersweet” apples make this blend Graviva! Semidry Cider- The Gravenstein sparkles in this bright, crisp cider. The refreshing acidity is balanced with a touch of sweetness. We sourced the Gravs and other heirloom cider apples for this blend from organic growers in the Sebastopol area. The Grav lends its lovely aromatics, while a mix of “bittersweet” apples—which were specially developed over the centuries for fermented cider—imparts lively tannins.  unexpectedly complex, tannic, and brawny, with a long finish.
January Barbecue Smoked Cider-  We first sampled this cider on an unseasonably warm winter day while grilling. Wow! This is one of our experiments gone awesome. We smoked a few apples from our farm over pear wood, then fermented and aged them with a base blend of fresh-pressed Sonoma County–grown cider and heirloom apples.   Barred Rock Bourbon Barrel-Aged-  Cold weather calls for savory sippers, and Barred Rock is the perfect winter warmer. This aged cider is a blend of 100% fresh-pressed late-season Sonoma County organic heirloom apples — including Arkansas Black, Black Twig, and other varieties — half fermented in neutral oak barrels, then blended and aged for several months in Kentucky bourbon barrels. This cider was fermented to dryness, no backsweetening, so your palate will experience all that the barrel aging has to offer, without any cloying effects. It's a plush, full-bodied cider with notes of vanilla, amaretto, and toasted marshmallow, its velvety mouthfeel brightened by a touch of acidity.

Troy Cider, Motorcycle Wineries- Today, American apple growers are facing nearly as tough a time as Prohibition, and new cider-apple plantings are miniscule. The Troy Cider label is our exhaustive effort to sustain the quintessential beauty of apples in America. Cider apples are not grown in industrial orchards. They are the gnarled, twisted, wonderful trees in tall grass, overgrown by mistletoe. They are green, yellow, brown, red, black, pink, orange; shriveled, knotted skin; tannic, sour, tremendously fragrant and sweet. Some have been on the ground for weeks, desiccating into fantastic concentration, others are picked right off the tree for a crisp brightness, 2012 will be a blend of the essence of California, nurtured from the roots of lonely trees from backyards, abandoned orchards, and swampy hillsides. I hope our cider will preserve the magic in those trees for a long, long time.
